Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in Family Violence

We need to rethink our perceptions of TBI in Family Violence. When we consider the current conversation and evidence about the long term impacts of subconcussive and concussive injury in contact sports and the correlation to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, we should be giving the same consideration to the risks of subconcussive and concussive injuries sustained in Family Violence, this is not without consequences. 

This workshop looks at the cause and affect of concussive and subconcussive head injury through Family Violence:

• What forces are involved that cause concussive and subconcussive head injury
• Discusses sex differences that lead to the likelihood of sustaining TBI from concussive and subconcussive head injury and recovery from head injury
• Discusses the physiological signs and symptoms of concussive and subconcussive brain injury
• Discusses the findings of current research into CTE and the links to TBI in Family Violence
• Discusses the threshold(s) for brain injury - early signs of neurological impact following a blow or shake to the head, and the effect of cumulative injuries as is found in Family Violence
• Discusses the difference in physiological risks between adults and children
• Gives a lived experience account of TBI in Family Violence and the affects over the lifetime
